Mayor Hans Liang opened the August 19th City Council Meeting. He has been serving as the mayor since the March 3rd election when three new Councilmembers were elected.

Councilmember Yvonne Yiu in District 2. Councilmember Fred Sornoso in District 3. Councilmember Henry Lo in District 4.

The new Councilmembers said they were not ready to service as Mayor Pro Tem or Mayor until they had experience serving on our City Council.

All five of the Councilmembers voted to accept a new program that would allow Hans Liang to serve as mayor and Peter Chan to serve a mayor pro tem for four months each to give the new members a chance to learn their new jobs.

Mayor Hans Liang said it has been his honor and pleasure to serve you as Mayor and Councilmember. He thanked his parents and his wife, Lani for their love, support and understanding.  He recalled that his father attended the first time as he took his oath of office as Mayor. He believes that his father is still watching over him today. He thanked all of the staff and department heads for their support. He thanked City Manager Ron Bow and City Attorney Karl Berger for their support. We work as a team.

He served as mayor for one year because of the virus. We must adapt. He thanked the former and present Council for their support. He is optimist we will do more great things.

He is very proud of our New Code of Conduct that will help them to operate with each other and the city staff.

He is grateful to step into the City’s culture and make new friends.

He thanked the City Clerk and his staff for their support. He thanked the City Treasurer and his staff for their support.

He joked with Peter Chan that he could now read the executive order into the record at the beginning of the September 2nd meeting.

He thanked all of the Councilmembers and said that our future will be very bright.

He thanked all of the residents for their support and asked everyone to stay safe.

Councilmember Henry Lo thanked Hans Liang for his leadership and their Code of Conduct. We may not agree but we must disagree with respect.

Councilmember Fred Sornoso said he was pleased to have Hans Liang as mayor to support their new members.

Mayor Pro Tem Peter Chan thanked Hans Liang for his service a mayor for the last year. We are friends and we work well together.

Councilmember Yvonne Yiu thanked Hans Liang for his leadership.

City Clerk Vince Chang thanked Hans Liang for his service as mayor.

Councilmember Fred Sornoso announced that he did not want to serve as Mayor Pro Tem or Mayor at this time since he has several personal issues that he is dealing with. He suggested Yvonne Yiu be the new Mayor Pro Tem.

Councilmember Yvonne Yiu agreed to become the new Mayor Pro Tem. She will need the staff’s assistance.

Mayor Hans Liang said we would work together. He asked for a consensus on the change on the order of leadership.

Councilmember Henry Lo said we are a team. He is OK with this change. Yvonne should be Mayor Pro Tem since this year is the 100th Anniversary of the Women’s right to vote.

Mayor Pro Tem Peter Chan said we are working together. He is OK with Yvonne Yiu being the new Mayor Pro Tem.

Mayor Hans Liang said he would continue to help all of the Councilmembers. We are a team.

City Clerk Vince Chang administered the oath of office to Yvonne Yiu as the new Mayor Pro Tem.

Mayor Pro Tem Yvonne Yiu said she is honored to be chosen by the voters in District 2. She has plans to help the city’s funds. She will follow Peter Chan’s leadership.

Mayor Peter Chan joked that he and Hans are the COVID-19 mayors. This is his third time as mayor. He is honored and humbled. They will work together. He is opened to all suggestions and ideas. It is changing times. We will work together for a better Monterey Park.
