Sgt. Paul Yniguez, welcome every on to Nation Night Out in Monterey Park on August 7. The event was held in front of City Hall. He thanked every one for attending tonight in this hot weather.

Sgt. Yniguez thanked the cooks: Bill O’Shea and Ed Dominiguez for grilling the hundreds of hot dogs. He introduced Police Chief Jim Smith to the residents.

Chief Smith introduced City Manager Ron Bow, Fire Chief Scott Haberle, Recreation and Community Services Director Inez Alvarez, Capt. Steven Coday, Capt. Kelly Gordon and Sgt. Paul Yniguez. He thanked all of his staff including the Monterey Park Police Officers Associations and all of the sponsors.  He thanked the employees and volunteers from Exact Tax, the Explorers and students from Mark Keppel for putting this event together.

He told the audience neighborhoods throughout the City of Monterey Park are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 35th Annual National Night Out (NNO) crime prevention event.
The Monterey Park Police Department has an evening of educational activities, displays from the Special Response Team, K9 Unit, Community Services Bureau, Animal Services and members of the Monterey Park Fire Department and Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.).

Hot dogs, chips, sodas and more will be served.

National Night Out is designed to: (1) Increase crime prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and relationships in, local anti-crime efforts; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; (4) Send a message to criminals by letting them know that our neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the Monterey Park Police Department, involved over 16,000 communities from all 50 states, United States territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, over 37 million people are expected to participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime.” This event unites our nation.

Monterey Park is experiencing more property crimes imported into our community because of changes in the laws.

His department has arrested several persons for crimes against our residents and businesses in the last few weeks.

The City Council supports our police department.  If you see something suspicious call 911 and let the officers ask the questions.

Monterey Park is a safe city to live in, to work in and to play in.

The Monterey Park Police Department is proud to serve our community.

He introduced Mayor Stephen Lam, Mayor Pro Tem Peter Chan, Councilmember Hans Liang, Councilmember Mitch Ing, Councilmember Teresa Real Sebastian, City Clerk Vince Chang, City Treasurer Joseph Leon, Becky Chang from Congressmember Judy Chu’s office, Daisy Ma from Assemblymember Ed Chau’s office, Monica Killen from State Senator Ed Hernandez’ office and Hoang Nguyen from Supervisor Hilda Solis’ office to the residents.

Mayor Lam welcomed all to this event. You can visit with our police officers and firefighters tonight. They protect our community. This is a great event. He thanked all of sponsors for their support.

Councilmember Liang welcomed the residents to this event. Please thank our police and fire departments. They protect us from the wolves.

Councilmember Ing also welcomed everyone to National Night Out. His wife, Gloria’s uncle is a retired Los Angeles Police Officer. His nephew in Canada is a Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer.

The residents are the eyes and ears of our community. Some people are still robbing homes in our city. Call the police if you see something suspicious and let them ask the questions. Thank you!

Councilmember Real Sebastian recalled the five second rule “It food falls on the floor-pick it up quick-dust it off and eat it.”  The city has provided 200 residents the “Ring Door Bells” at a discount to help prevent robberies. “If you see something-say something” when it happens at the time. Stay hydrated!

Clerk Chang thanked the residents for caring. We are confidant in our first responders. They are out there 24/7. We need to support them. The Monterey Park Police Department is number one!  Enjoy the event and have a great evening!

Treasurer Leon reminded people to keep valuables out of sight in your car. Please join the Neighborhood Watch and meet your neighbors. You can attend the Police and Fire Academy in the city and learn how our first responders work. Have a great night!

The Monterey Park Lion’s Club and the Monterey Park’s Woman’s Club had booths which provided information on their service clubs.

Builders of all ages enjoyed creating cars or bird feeders from our local Home Depot store.

Office Ray Cota and his K-9 partner Veeda visited with the residents. Veeda helps protect us by capturing the bad guys.

Children enjoyed climbing up on one of the police’s Special Response vehicle.

The police displayed their Special Response team truck filled with life saving equipment.

Lt. Scott Wiese and his team displayed many of their SWAT guns to the delight of the children.  Lt. Wiese said many of them see these weapons in the computer games.

Members of the Monterey Park Police Officers Association were on hand to answer questions from the residents and to provide them with safety information.

The Hot Dog Roast area with cooks Bill O’Shea and Ed Dominguez was a very busy site for hungry guests.

They also enjoyed popcorn, soft drinks, chips, cookies and more.

Booths from the Library, Code Enforcement, City Clerks, Chamber, Environmental Commission, the Gas Company and many more all offered important information to all of the guests.

Monterey Park residents were united with their fellow Americans in a Night Out Against Crime.
