LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor:

Everyone needs to know about Ride 2 Recovery “Improving Wounded Warriors” Rehabilitation and Recovery through Cycling”, a partnership between The American Legion Family and the Fitness Challenge Foundation to help injured veterans overcome physical obstacles.  Ride 2 Recovery raises money to support spinning and outdoor cycling programs at military and VA medical facilities.

Cycling is an important part of recovery and rehabilitation.  The benefits of Ride 2 Recovery include weight loss, improved cardio fitness, recovery and rehabilitation, mental health and improved morale.  Also, it gives participants a sense of normalcy, accomplishment, pride and camaraderie and provides relief from depression and other juegos inflables problems that often accompany recovery and rehabilitation.

American Legion and Auxiliary Departments actively support Ride 2 Recovery’s weeklong cycling events through donations, volunteers and use of Post facilities.  Participating in the ride are hundreds of U.S. troops injured while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, along with celebrities, athletes and elected officials.

The Golden Gate Challenge Event is set for October 2-8, 2011, leaving San Francisco and finishing at the Santa Monica Pier with a concert featuring veterans and their families.  The American Legion Riders will provide a motorcycle escort during the event and Posts along the way sponsor rest stops and dinners.  Complete information is provided on the Internet for those wishing to participate or anyone interested in cheering the participants on as they pass by various locations.

This is a letter that appeared in local newspapers in 2005 about “wearing RED on Friday”.  What happened, now all of a sudden we are supposed to wear BLUE?  The Marine Corps started this a long time ago!

Dear Editor:

The Americans who support our troops are the silent majority; we are not ”organized” to reflect who we are, or to reflect what our opinions are.  The 1st Marine Division Association is starting a “grass roots” movement to show our solidarity by urging that every red-blooded American who supports our young men and women in service to WEAR SOMETHING RED on Fridays.  They want to involve The American Legion, the VFW and other veteran organizations, the local press and local TV, and continue carrying the message to all levels to show our support of the troops.

Share this with friends, fellow workers and neighbors and it won’t be long before the USA will be covered in RED – and make our troops know there are many people thinking of their well-being.  Let’s get the word out.  (Quoted from Semper Fi News for April 2005.)
