Letter to the Editor: NFBPWC Stands with Black Lives Matter

The National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs (NFBPWC) is a nonprofit membership organization that stands for equal rights for all, and advocates for those rights. We believe in the Constitution of the United States of America and the right to peaceful protests and protesters. We believe that Black Lives Matter!

We stand with those who are outraged by the murder of yet another unarmed black man, Mr. George Floyd, at the hands of a police officer who swore to protect us and our property. Appallingly, this is one of so many instances in which Black Lives were deemed expendable. We stand with Black Lives Matter!

We understand that the protests and the outrage displayed are due to an accumulation of the historic racism and inequality Black people have been experiencing in our country over the last 400 years. We support Black Lives Matter!

It is unacceptable, that in 2020, the business and professional world continues to NOT be inclusive of women, especially Black Women, Indigenous Women, and Women of Color.

NFBPWC will continue to advocate for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. We support the equal treatment of and the end to discrimination against minority women as part of our organization’s recognition that all women’s rights are human rights.

We continue to be optimistic that systemic change is coming. In remembrance of our suffragette foremothers and the 19th Amendment, we encourage you to use your right to vote to facilitate the change you want to see in our country.

In the meantime, we encourage our members to raise your voices however you see fit which could include participating in the local Club.  East Los Angeles-Montebello BPW is the local Club of NFBPWC.  It normally meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 4:30 P.M. for networking and 5:00 P.M. for the meeting at Marie Callender’s Restaurant, 220 S. Atlantic Blvd., Monterey Park.  Due to COVID-19 meetings will restart September 23rd. For information contact Linda Wilson at lindalwilson@juno.com.

If you want us to do more as an organization, please let us know or if you would like to be part of our NFBPWC “rapid response team” where we develop our reactions to ongoing issues in a timely manner, please email ec@nfbpwc.org.

In Solidarity,

Sandy Thompson, President
