6th Annual LAMP Walk for Literacy

City Librarian Norma Arvizu welcomed everyone to today’s annual walk held at Barnes Park on September 6. She introduced Boardmember of the Community College District Mike Eng, City Councilmember Peter Chan, City Clerk Vince Chang, Alhambra School Boardmember Bob Gin and thanked the walkers for their participation in this fund raising event.

Mr. Eng, a former Library Boardmember, spoke about the LAMP English and Citizenship Program that was started in Monterey Park 30 years ago. He recalled that many years ago some government officials were not interested in helping people become new citizens.

He advised the walkers “You are walking for people who are not here today. You are walking for people to become citizens”.

Councilmember Peter Chan, City Clerk Vince Chang, Librarian Norma Arvizu, School Boardmember Bob Gin were on hand to support the dedicated residents who were walking the course on the hot and humid morning.

Librarian Norma Arvizu spoke about the LAMP program and the Reading Rockets program that is sponsored by the Asian American Economic Development Enterprise. She introduced Program Director Helen Au, Administrative Assistant Ann Tsuchiya, Interns Emily Lam, Bernice Luu and Jason Lee to Councilmember Peter Chan, City Clerk Vince Chang, School Boardmember Mike Eng, School Boardmember Bob Gin and the walkers. She thanked them for their outstanding charitable work in supporting the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library and the LAMP Literacy Program.

The walkers registered at the booth and received a tee shirt for their $15 donation.

The residents enjoyed the stroll around the park while raising funds for the LAMP English & Citizenship Program.
