Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library Receives $160,000 in Grants
July 28, 2014 – The Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library gained additional funding, through the LAMP Literacy Program and the Children’s Division. The literacy program of the library was awarded $135,279 in grant funding from the Department of Adult Education for the EL Civics / ESL 2014/15 fiscal year. This amount is the highest award the literacy program has received since it opened the literacy program in the library in 1984. Serving over 1,500 students annually, the LAMP Program continues to strive for excellence by earning payment points through student academic gains which determine grant funding.
Additionally, the LAMP Literacy Program was awarded a new LSTA Grant, Pitch an Idea: “Teacher in a Tablet” from the California State Library for the amount of $20,000. With the use of iPads and a Mac Computer, adult literacy students will have access to ESL (English as a Second Language) curriculum accessible through iPads for home study. This new pilot program is the first ESL program to offer preloaded curriculum specifically designed for students at their tested reading levels. Ten iPads will be purchased for the trial phase of this new reading program.
The Children’s Department of the library was awarded a “Eureka!” Leadership Institute Grant for $5,000 for innovation in creating a children’s “Nursery Rhyme App”. The new designed ‘app’ will be accessible from the library’s website to all parents who wish to learn children’s early literacy rhymes in many different languages. The creation of this ‘app’ is new to libraries in the United States and the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library will be the first to host this innovative new learning media via a library website.
