Assemblymember Chau Statement on State Budget
Assemblymember Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park) issued the following statement today, June 15 after the Legislature finalized the State Budget:
“Today’s budget reinforces our commitment to ensuring stability by paying down debt and building reserves, while allowing us to make real investments in our people and infrastructure, something which we have not been able to do in almost a decade.
“Making the right investments in our future is certainly a priority this year that will be accomplished by providing major increases of over $200 million for Child Care and Preschool combined, while increasing Cal Grant stipends for eligible students to help cover the costs of books and supplies, all of which will go a long way in assisting working parents and in developing tomorrow’s leaders.
“A shot to the arm of our economy will come from our investment of Cap and Trade funds towards targeted priorities, such as $130 million for affordable housing that will create badly needed jobs while providing assistance to families that need it most.
“This budget continues to affirm our on going commitment of investing in our judicial system by providing a $233 million funding increase to our courts, which will help combat the impacts of court closures and service reductions on the public.”
Assemblymember Chau represents the communities of Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City and portions of Montebello and South El Monte.
