Monterey Park Updates

Monterey Park Opens New Barnes Park Picnic Shelter

Updated 6,000 square foot facility provides reserveable spaces for families and groups to hold special events

On Sunday, June 1, the City of Monterey Park held a ribbon cutting ceremony to open the new Barnes Park picnic shelter. The new shelter features seating for over 240 people plus six workstations with water and electricity and adjacent barbeques.

With over 6,000 square feet of shaded area, the shelter can
be used by six different small groups at one time, or be
used by larger groups. Another highlight is the roof composition, which will keep the shaded area up to 20 degrees cooler than in direct sunlight.

Monterey Park elected officials performed the ribbon cutting ceremony as part of the Monterey Lions Club Breakfast, an annual community event that attracted over 600 people to raise funds for the group’s charitable causes.

The Barnes shelter was constructed at a cost of approximately $550,000 and built as part of the city’s Park Master Plan Capital Improvement Program.

Reservations for the new shelter are now being taken for dates in late June and into the future. For more information about available dates and rental costs, please contact the Recreation and Community Services Department at 626-307-1388.

Utility/Traffic Box Street Beautification Project
City seeking volunteer artists to decorate city’s traffic control boxes

The City of Monterey Park is seeking local artists to decorate over 40 traffic control boxes in themes that feature geraniums (the official city flower) and, potentially, other thoughtful, community appropriate designs.

Artists will be asked to submit a sketch of a proposed traffic control box for review by the Community Participation Commission. The commission will check to make sure all eligibility requirements are being met, and then assign an available box. Boxes are expected to be awarded on a quarterly basis

Please download a program packet (PDF) that includes guidelines, an application and

waiver and submit to the city hall recreation dept. For more info, please contact recreation at 626-307-1388.
