Kim Plater was the first female police officer of the Covina Police Department and the Baldwin Park Police Department. She retired from Cal Poly Pomona as Chief of Police. Alice Slaughter was the first female Police Officer at Cal Poly Pomona. In April 2011 Plater received a Woman of Achievement award from State Senator Ed Hernandez in recognition of her work in support of Law Enforcement and Domestic Violence issues. Plater has handled hundreds of domestic violence cases. One in four women has some connection over a lifetime with domestic abuse. The Covina Woman’s Club formed a coalition to combat this and to educate people. They now have 200 members and represent 100 agencies. They have a legislative committee and currently are tracking sexual assault bills including sexual assault in the military. There are 26,000 assaults each year in the military.
Wednesday, April 23rd is Denim Day in recognition of Sexual Violence Awareness Month. The campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous attitudes about sexual assault.
The California Federation of Business and Professional Women in its Public Policy Statement “supports elimination of all violence perpetrated against women and supports the protection of victims’ rights.” East Los Angeles-Montebello BPW is a member of the California Federation and also a member of EPW-USA and BPW International. Membership is open to anyone who supports this and other items on our Public Policy Statement.
