Assemblymember Ed Chau Recognizes Dr. Shelley Enger as 2014 WomAn of the Year

On March 10, Assemblymember Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park) recognized Dr. Shelley Enger as the 2014 “Woman of the Year” for the 49th Assembly District during a legislative ceremony held at the Assembly Chambers.  The ceremony recognizes women who have made outstanding contributions to California as part of Women’s History Month.

“Dr. Enger’s leadership in promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) for many years has made her an influential force in the education community of the San Gabriel Valley,” said Assemblymember Chau.  “Through her tireless work and dedication, Dr. Enger has inspired many students to pursue higher education degrees in the field of science and made outstanding contributions to the district along the way.”

Dr. Shelley Enger is a trained cancer epidemiologist. She co-founded the Fundamentals of Research Science and Advanced Topics in Research Science courses for interested students who attend San Marino High School in the San Marino Unified School District (SMUSD).

Dr. Enger also chairs the SMUSD Academics Advisory Committee (AAC), an appointed board which brings together administrators, faculty and the community to discuss educational priorities.  Dr. Enger has collaborated with AAC members in developing STEM internship opportunities at well-known institutions, such as Caltech, University of Southern California, and Pasadena City College.  These internships allow students to learn firsthand how their academic training is implemented in real laboratory settings.

Dr. Enger volunteers at college fairs for her alma mater, UC Berkeley, where she also serves as a seasonal reader of freshman applications for the Office of Undergraduate Admission. She has received a PTA Honorary Service Award for her many years of volunteer work in SMUSD, and she has served as co-leader of her daughter’s Girl Scout troop for the past 11 years.
