DUI/DL Checkpoint August 21, 2009

The Monterey Park Police Department received a $55,000 DUI Enforcement Grant from

the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Safety

Administration and is announcing that they will be conducting a Driving under the

Influence / Drivers License Checkpoint on Friday, August 21, 2009. The operation will

be during nighttime hours at an undisclosed location in the City of Monterey Park.

“Our message is clear: driving under bouncy castle for sale the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be

tolerated,” said Chief Jones Moy. “Driving under the influence is a crime that is

completely preventable.”

Recent studies have shown that communities that regularly include sobriety checkpoints

as part of an all-encompassing anti-DUI program see a reduction in alcohol-related

fatalities and injuries.

Sobriety checkpoints reduce alcohol-related traffic fatalities by 20 percent on average

according to a study by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) scientists

published in the “Traffic Injury Prevention” journal – a fact echoed by Wendy J.

Hamilton, President of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

In 2006 there were 1,597 fatal collisions and over 31,000 people injured in California

that involved alcohol.

The Monterey Park Police Department conducts regularly scheduled checkpoints as

part of an ongoing education and enforcement program designed to apprehend drivers

who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and who drive without a valid

license. Past operations have resulted in multiple arrests of drivers who are driving

under the influence.

The checkpoint is made possible by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety

through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
