ASSEMBLYMEMBER CHAU RECOGNIZES CALIFORNIA DATA PRIVACY DAY
Assemblymember Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park) presented House Resolution 27 on the Assembly Floor, which recognized January 28th as California Data Privacy Day. The theme for Data Privacy Day is “Respecting Privacy, Safeguarding Data, and Enabling Trust.”
“As technology continues to rapidly evolve, many of us are unaware of the risks posed to privacy by new technologies,” said Assemblymember Chau. “Data Privacy Day encourages all Californians to discuss technology and learn about the tools available to control their own privacy online.”
California has been at the forefront of both innovation and privacy protection and is unique in that its Constitution expressly protects an individual’s right to privacy from both governmental and private actors. Nearly all Californians (92%) have a cellphone and 58% of them have smartphones. In addition, more than half of Californians go online to purchase goods, use a social networking site, do banking, or get health information.
“It is my hope that in recognizing a day that acknowledges the importance of protecting our privacy, we make it a priority in our everyday lives.”
Assemblymember Ed Chau represents the 49th Assembly District, comprised of the communities of Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City and portions of Montebello, and South El Monte. He is Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Privacy.
