Rotary Clubs Give Shoes to Homeless Families
Two local Rotary Clubs collaborated on Nov. 16 at Payless Shoe Source, 834 E. Valley Blvd., Alhambra, CA to provide new shoes to homeless families in the San Gabriel Valley.
The Alhambra Rotary Club and San Gabriel Valley New Generation Rotary Club have arranged for families served by Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley to shop for new shoes at Payless Shoe Source.
“We are very grateful for the compassion and generosity of the Rotarians from Alhambra and New Generation,” said Karen Roberson, chairwoman of the Family Promise board of directors.
Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley is a nonprofit organization that was established in 2009 to help homeless families. It brings together a network of local congregations that will take turns housing and feeding the families.
Family Promise serves three to five families at a time, providing them safe sleeping space, three healthy meals, and case management assistance with the goal of returning them to stable housing and employment.
In two years of operation, the organization has served 31 families, including 36 adults and 63 children (three of whom were born during the time the family was with Family Promise). In addition to the families currently in the program, some of the graduate families will also be getting new shoes.
Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley is part of a nationwide movement with 182 affiliated networks in 41 states, utilizing the services of more than 160,000 volunteers and 6,000 congregations. Together, these networks serve more than 49,000 homeless family members, of which about 60 percent are children.
