MONTEREY PARK FIRE DEPARTMENT UPDATE

On October 6, 2013 at 1:44 a.m. the Monterey Park Fire Department responded to 243 W. Markland Drive in the City of Monterey Park for a residential structure fire.

Monterey Park fire units, with the assistance of Alhambra, San Gabriel,
Montebello, Pasadena and South Pasadena fire departments, responded to
the incident.

Upon arrival, Monterey Park fire units encountered a large two story
residential structure that was fully involved in fire. An aggressive
fire attack was established with over 50 firefighters, which included
nine engine companies, four ladder trucks, two rescue ambulances, one
air utility and three battalion chiefs which enabled the fire to be
confined to residence of origin and brought under control in 1 hour and
45 minutes. This was a very difficult fire to fight due to the fact that
firefighters had encountered exploding medical oxygen cylinders that the
resident had stored at the front door, which increased the intensity of
the fire.

The estimated cost of damage is $625,000 to the structure and $150,000
in content damage. There were no injuries to the occupants of the
structure or firefighters.

The Monterey Park Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit investigated
the fire and the cause is still under investigation.
