Munoz Leads Rosemead
Girls at MVL Finals
By Chuck Lyons
The Mission Valley League Track and Field Finals were once again very good entertainment, and Brittnie Munoz of Rosemead helped the Panthers girl’s 4×400 meters relay team to victory in a dramatic way, said Rosemead Head Coach Amanda Steging.
Munoz, a junior, was the only girl athlete to win three events at the finals hosted by Mt. View High School at Gabrielino High School’s all-weather track and field.
Munoz took the baton and started the last lap far enough behind that it looked like Rosemead would finish in second. She gradually trimmed the lead and caught Arroyo’s anchor runner in front of the stands near the finish before pulling away for a victory for her teammates junior Regina Ly, senior Annalyssia VanBeers and sophomore Edlin Simental in front of the cheering crowd.
Munoz also won the 1600 meters in 5:27.05 and the 3200 meters in 12:05.77 as she won those events for the second straight year.
Girl’s double winners included senior Liliana Bolanos of Mt. View in the 200 (27.54) and 400 (1:01.76), freshman Kelly Ferguson of Gabrielino in the 100 hurdles (16.78) and 300 intermediate hurdles (49.15), and Lynna Lam of Arroyo in the long jump (15’11”) and triple jump (33’9”).
Other girl winners were Gabrielino’s 4×100 relay team (52.69) of freshman Allyn Nguyen, and seniors Jackie Onwuzurike, and Annie Thai, and Melissa Thompkins, senior Carol Tsang of El Monte in the 100 (13.47), senior Elyan Ramirez of South El Monte in the 800 (2:27.13), sophomore Van Tran of Rosemead in the high jump (4’8”), Maira Bugarin of Arroyo in the pole vault (9’6’), senior Christina Almaraz of South El Monte in the shot put (33’9”), and Ivy Nunez of Arroyo in the discus (87’6’).
In boy’s action, junior Jayson Perez of South El Monte won three events, the 800 (1:59.48), 1600 (4:31.96), and the 3200 (10:04.15).
Double winners were Rosemead senior Raul Lira in the 200 (22.93) and in the 4×100 relay (44.87) along with team members senior Antonio Lam, junior Greg Parham, and senior John Vuong, junior Eddie Gutierrez of Mt. View in the 110 high hurdles (15.47) and 300 intermediate hurdles (40.01), and senior Steven Wilson of Mt. View in the long jump (20’9.25’) and triple jump (43’8’).
Other boy’s winners were Paul Ruiz of Arroyo in the 400 (51.42), senior Juan Ramirez of Mt. View in the 100 (11.34), Arroyo’s 4×400 relay team (3:31.95) of Lorenzo Hernandez, Paul Ruiz, Efren Alcala and Aaron Magno, senior Omar Rodriguez of Mt. View in the high jump (6’0”), junior Merlin Huang of Gabrielino in the pole vault (12’0”), senior Brian Luc of Rosemead in the shot put (50’10.5”), and Efrain Carrillo of Arroyo in the discus (126’2”).
