May is Poppy Month
What is Poppy Month? Each year, American Legion Auxiliary volunteers distribute millions of red crepe paper poppies in exchange for contributions to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans. The veterans who make the flowers are able to earn a small wage, which helps supplement their income. Donations received by Auxiliary volunteers for the poppies are used only to assist and support veterans and their families. In 1923, the poppy became the official flower of the American Legion Family in memory of the soldiers who fought on the battlefields during World War I. The poppy was the famous wartime poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D. Please support our effort to distribute poppies. Poppies are available during the entire month of May at the Post and from all Auxiliary members.
In memory of the Poppy, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 397 will host a Poppy Dance, Saturday, May 11, 2013, from 6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Dance the night away with East Side Groove and DJ Manny! Cost is $10/per person or $18/per couple. Dinner is available for $5.
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 397 will meet May 9, Thursday, at 5:30. Note that this is a change from the regular Wednesday meeting date. The American Legion will meet 5/15 at 6:30 p.m.
Join us on Saturday, May 25th, at 9 a.m. at Resurrection Cemetery, 966 Potrero Grande Dr., Rosemead, for our Flags for the Fallen program. We need volunteers to help us place flags on the gravesides of our veterans at Resurrection Cemetery. Flags will be provided.
Friday, May 3rd, we will be serving a Cinco de Mayo dinner, enchiladas, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Come and enjoy a home cooked meal.
