Vote By Mail Ballot Instructions Error
Monterey Park City Council candidate Peter Chan expressed concern at a press conference held on February 13 at Capital Seafood Restaurant that the vote by mail ballot instructions in the Chinese language was incomplete in the sample ballot book for the city’s March 5 Election.
Monterey Park’s ballot is printed in English, Spanish Vietnamese and Chinese
Mr. Chan said that he immediately e-mailed the City Clerk about the missing instructions on February 8.
On February 11 the City Clerk’s office did an investigation of the matter and found that Martin & Chapman, election suppliers for many cities, made the typographical error.
Martin & Chapman explained that the Chinese language instructions had been recently updated and the error occurred when the updated instructions were not correctly formatted so the text would wrap around to the next line. As a result several lines of the text were lost so the Chinese instructions had several blank lines.
Mr. Chan is not blaming anyone for the error but expressed concern that many Chinese language voters may not be able to complete their vote by mail ballot.
He has been heavily dedicated to fixing this situating since this could possibly cause an immense amount of problems for many of the large Chinese voting population within Monterey Park.
Peter Chan has always been dedicated to his community members and will not stop until the situation is fixed.
It is very important to all of Monterey Park that every vote counts in the election process.
Peter Chan, Councilmember Anthony Wong and former Assemblymember Mike Eng explained to the press and residents the correct way to complete the vote by mail ballot.
This election you will receive two ballots with votes to be marked on both sides. After you mark your selections be sure to tear off the top of the ballots for your records and put them in the return address envelope. Your must sign your name, address and the date of signing your ballots on the outside of the envelope and put a first class stamp on it before you mail it.
You can also bring your ballots to City Hall or a Polling place for this election to be counted as provisional ballots.
Peter Chan proudly announced that Monterey Park Police Officers Association has endorsed him. He is dedicated to keeping the city secure for its citizens.
SEIU Local 721, the Monterey Park Employees Union, as well as the Indo-China Coalition, many elected officials, longtime residents and the Eng Family also endorse Mr. Chan.
Peter Chan said his greater supporter is his wife, Jenny.
He thanked everyone for attending this press conference and enjoy a good lunch.
Monterey Park Council candidate Han Liang also held a press conference on February 13 at Capital Seafood Restaurant as well as one in front of City Hall.
His wife noticed the instructions in the Chinese language section on the ballot book were incomplete.
Mr. Liang stated the City Clerk’s office would be sending our postcards with the complete instructions to all of the Chinese language voters who have already received the sample ballot book.
The Chinese language instructions would be corrected in the next printing of the sample ballot book.
It is very important to inform the voters on how to complete their vote by mail ballots in any language.
Please be sure to vote on March 5.
