Arcadia Unit 247 announces Girls State Delegates for 2012
Sandy Houseknecht of Downey, President of Arcadia Unit 247 of the American Legion Auxiliary, has announced their Girls State candidates for 2012 chosen to attend the 69th session of Girls State to be held June 25th to July 1st at McKenna Hall, Claremont are Emily Prince (Gabrielino High), Amanda Yee (San Marino High), Marian Eckander (Arcadia High), Kelly Thu Dinh (Rosemead High) and Jessie Chen (Temple City High).
Girls State is a work/study program in functional government, giving young junior girls from high schools throughout the State of California the challenging experience of actual participation in city, county and state elections and functions. Through this program of the American Legion Auxiliary, some 550 young students spend a week of learning and inspiration to become patriotic, responsible and intelligent citizens devoted to service to their community and country.
The District alumni who attended Girls State last year will welcome the new candidates to a Tea on May 20th, 2:00 p.m., at Abraham Lincoln Post 241, 4725 Maine St., Baldwin Park, when they will be entertained and told more about what to expect at Girls State. Currently the alumni are busy planning an exciting and interesting afternoon for the future Girls Staters.
