ELAM In 1911 California women won the right to vote by a margin of 3,567 votes (1 percent of the votes cast or an average of one vote per precinct) making California the sixth State to grant women suffrage. The film reveals the campaign through historical materials, photographs and live action re-enactments. The campaign was won by personal one-on–one canvassing, auto tours, rallies and street corner speakers.

The script is drawn from first-hand accounts, newspaper reports, and photo

research with re-enactments using “actual” participants – Clara Foltz (the Criminal Justice Building in Los Angeles is named for her), Charlotte “Anita” Whitney, Katherine Edson, Maud Younger (the Millionaire Waitress) and Maria Lopez (a high school Spanish teacher) — to give their perspectives. The California suffrage campaign created the largest democracy of its time when over half a million women could vote. This amazing campaign was waged in just eight months. The day after the election it was declared “LOST,” but that was not the end. The film shows how the rightness of a cause promotes innovation and energy.
