TURKEY TALK?
By Mona Raskin
Whether it’s our City, State, or Federal Government.
Our troubled economy has surely affected our daily lives!
Budgets have been tight, not just at the city level, but at
all the above levels as well. Due to this problem, many city
positions have been vacated for several months, only a few
have been occupied by volunteers!
Yet, somehow, at our last city council meeting, their
discussion regarding a special financial fund set aside for
future holiday festivals! Their basic concern was whether
nearby shop owners may have a negative response to all the
booths trying to sell their wares, etc. However, one would
stop to wonder, however, if our budget was so tight, how
could they afford to support all these festivals? Actually, their
reply might be, “If their consumers are interested in shopping
at a festival, it could trigger the economy of our city! Well
that’s a maybe or just “Turkey Talk”!
In fact, there has been a rumor, that Social Security
recipients may receive an increase due to the cost of living
inflation in areas such as gasoline, groceries and a series
of other incidentals. If, that occurs, there may very well be
a surge in the economy because; consumers will have the
means to purchase more! That too, may be “Turkey Talk”, as
well!
We can only hope that if our shrinking economy can
heal, then maybe holidays, such as Halloween and Thanksgiving
can once again be enjoyed without any worrisome
financial concerns!
One other national holiday is “Veteran’s Day”,
November 11th. This is a day to stop and remember our
young men and women who have given their all to protect
our nation! Over the years, we have chosen to support
them in many ways! One way is to often donate items such
as clothing, books, etc. Today, we left our donation at our
usual spot, underneath our large tree located on our front
lawn! When the truck came to retrieve it, it was not there!
We could hardly believe it! This has never happened before!
Perhaps, the economy has been a factor. Never the less, it
was an atrocious act! So, friends and neighbors, be aware and
keep your eye out and safeguard your property! Mean while,
have a safe and happy holiday!
