Rosemead HS Varsity T&F Sweeps Gabrielino, Finishes 4-1

Rosemead –Rosemead High School boy’s and girl’s varsity track and field teams swept host Gabrielino High School on April 30 to finish Mission Valley League action at 4-1.
Rosemead girls won 71-59 even though they didn’t have any double winners, which is unusual for the visiting Panthers. Good depth with many second and third place Rosemead finishers made the difference, said Rosemead Head Coach Amanda Steging.
Winners for Rosemead girls were seniors Annalyssia VanBeers in the 200 meters (27.32), and Christine Truong in the triple jump (30’9”), juniors Brittnie Munoz in the 1600 (5:26.63) and Jeanne Tran in the long jump (14’11), and sophomores Melanie Chhem with a Rosemead school record 9’0” performance in the pole vault and Van Tran in the high jump (4’6”).
Gabrielino was led by triple winner Melissa Thompkins, a senior. She won the 400 (1:06.41), was a member of the winning 4×100 relay team along with Allyn Nguyen, and seniors Jackie Onwuzurike, and Annie Thai, and Thompkins was on the winning 4×400 relay team (3:39.47) along with Nguyen, Thai and Ivy To.
Sophomore Kelly Ferguson of Gabrielino was a double winner as she placed first in the 100 high hurdles (17.08) and 300 intermediate hurdles (51.25). Other Gabrielino winners were Thai in the 100 (13.2), Nguyen in the 800 (2:33.75), Daphne Lin in the 3200 (12:47.28), and Veronica Pacheco in the shot put (25’2”).
Rosemead’s girls finished 5-3 overall and 4-1 in league, and Gabrielino finished 1-6 overall
and 1-4 in league.
In boy’s action, Rosemead won 81-55, led by seniors Raul Lira, Greg Parham, Victor Serrano, Ben Lang, Simon Liang, and Brian Luc. Lira won three races, the 200 (22.81), 400 (58.82) and was a member of the winning 4X100 relay team (45.03) along with Antonio Lam, David Dang, and John Vuong.
Rosemead double winners were Parham in the 100 (11.15) and long jump (19’10”), and Victor Serrano in the 800 (2:06.32) and 3200 (10:37.49). Other seniors winning for Rosemead were Simon Liang in the high jump (5’8”), Ben Lang in the pole vault (10’6”), and Brian Luc in the shot put (45’11”).
Winners for Gabrielino were Willis Lam in the 1600 (4:51.78), Johnny Carter in the 110 high hurdles (15.81), Benz Tran in the 300 intermediate hurdles (42.25), Tyler Hoffman in the triple jump (36’9”), and Gabrielino’s 4×400 relay team of Andrew Esguerra, Hoffman, Tran and Sam Arick.
Gabrielino finished 3-3-1 overall and 2-3 in league.
