San Gabriel – Do you like making artwork or taking photographs of historic missions in California?

San Gabriel Mission’s Fourth Annual Art Exhibit and Contest is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, as part of mission’s monthly History Day. The event is planned from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Inflatable Water Slide Contestants may work on their entry on April 26-May 1, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and on May 2 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Categories are landscape oil painting, portrait oil painting, watercolor, pastel drawing, drawing, amateur photography and professional photography. All entries must be about San Gabriel Mission.

Certificates and prizes will be given for first place, second place, and third place and there will be a $100 prize for Overall Best of Exhibit.

Participants also will be able to go on a self-guided tour of the mission church, museum and grounds and look at model missions donated to San Gabriel Mission to learn more about the history of missions in California. The church may be unavailable for about one hour if there is a wedding or other ceremony.

Contestants can complete an entry form, available at mission’s gift shop or www.sangabrielmission.org, and deliver it no later than April 27, to San Gabriel Mission Gift Shop, 427 S. Junipero Serra Dr. (at Mission Road), San Gabriel or mail it no later than April 27 to Art Contest, San Gabriel Mission Gift Shop, 428 S. Mission Dr., San Gabriel, CA 91776.

Contestants only pay regular admission on May 2 and everything else is free. Judging will start at noon, followed by award presentations. Any persons with the artist also pay admission.

All materials and equipment and chair must be provided by the contestant. The entry should be no larger than three feet wide by three feet tall. Photography entries can be mounted. Contestants should place their name on the back of their entry with no identification on the front. Contestants only pay regular admission per entry on May 2, and anything else is free.

Visitors attending to only view the exhibit and not participate in the contest will receive one free prize drawing ticket per paid admission for a few free prizes to be drawn for at noon and 1 p.m.

People of all ages are invited to participate. Persons age 17 and younger MUST be with their parent or guardian. Admission prices are free for age five and younger, $3 for age 6 through 17, $5 for age 18-61, and $4 for age 62 and older. The mission museum and gardens will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free parking is available on a first-come basis in the large church parking lot or on nearby streets.
