Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley was founded in 2009 as a local affiliate of Family Promise, by a diverse coalition of faith-based communities that collaborated to help families get off the streets and regain their independence. Since 2009, Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley (FPSGV) has played a critical role in mitigating the region’s homeless crisis, providing advocacy, a temporary shelter program, our congregational network shelter program and homeless prevention services.
Karen Roberson was one of the founding members of Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley. She currently serves on its Board. She is a retired licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), and she has worked in the areas of juvenile delinquency, child abuse, family services, rape hotline, adoption, pediatric hospice and healthcare. She found her niche to be in the area of healthcare social work with a special emphasis on trauma. She has worked in community social work as well. In 2008, she became concerned about family homelessness and began dialogue about a program called Family Promise. She worked with others to organize, and in 2011 Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley opened to serve families experiencing homelessness.
