CLASSIC FILM SCREENING PROGRAMS AND BARBARA RUSH
Submitted by Harold and Beryl Williams
Thanks to Professor Foster Hirsch’s enthusiasm for film and Monterey Park, we’ve had the opportunity to listen to views from many film stars since the Classic Film Series began in 2013. One of those film stars, Barbara Rush, passed away on March 31st of this year in Los Angeles. She was born in Denver, Colorado in 1927, moving with her family to Santa Barbara, California where she graduated from the University of California in Santa Barbara in 1948 before beginning her career in film. Her first acting was in the Drama Department at UC Santa Barbara. She won the Golden Globe as pioneering female newcomer for her role in IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE in 1953. She was a prolific actress with multiple roles in 1950s melodramas, such as MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION, released in 1954. During the summer of 2019, after viewing the film, we had the privilege of listening as Barbara Rush responded to Foster’s insightful questions during the Classic Film Screening program held that year. Thanks to all who participated in this unique event, especially to Barbara Rush for gracing us with her presence.
