Rosemead Girls Basketball Improve to 4-0 In MVL
Rosemead High School’s girl’s varsity basketball team defeated South Pasadena 55-50 in overtime on Jan. 17, and followed that with a 32-25 win at Arroyo on Jan. 19, and easily won 67-23 against visiting Mountain View on Jan. 21, to be the only undefeated team in Mission Valley League (MVL) play at 4-0.
Rosemead’s junior varsity girls also won at Arroyo and against Mt. View to remain unbeaten in league play. Rosemead’s frosh-soph girls defeated St. Matthias JV 33-25 on Jan. 8 for the first frosh-soph girls win at home in the school’s history, announced Rosemead girl’s Head Coach Jay Gauthier Sr.
Friday, Jan. 28, Rosemead visits South El Monte with the girl’s JV game at 3:15 p.m., the girl’s varsity game at 4:45 p.m., and the boy’s varsity game at 6:15 p.m.
Rosemead Lady Panthers sophomore gonfiabili guards Sydney Hua and Melody Gauthier led Rosemead in the three wins with help from their teammates. Hua scored 23 points and had five rebounds and four steals against South Pasadena in the game that Rosemead outscored the host Tigers 26-12 in the second half before outscoring South Pasadena 5-0 in overtime to win 50-45.
Gauthier had 15 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks, four assists and four steals. Center Priscilla Franco helped Rosemead with nine rebounds and three points and three assists. Kelsey Lee and Katie Nakamura led South Pasadena with 20 and 11 points, respectively.
In the MVL showdown for first place at Arroyo, Rosemead got out to a 17-5 halftime lead and then held on to win 32-25 to improve to 8-11 overall and 3-0 in league. Gauthier scored 18 points, Franco added five points, and senior guard Ivy Luong scored four points to help the Lady Panthers. Liz Cruz and Michelle Trieu both scored six points to lead Arroyo (7-12 overall
2-1 in league.
Against visiting Mt. View Vikings, Rosemead led 10-4 after the first quarter, then outscored Mt. View 27-10 in the second quarter to take a 37-14 halftime lead. Gauthier led the Lady Panthers with 21 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, six steals and four blocks. Luong scored a season-high 14 points and added three rebounds, while teammates Christine Giang scored eight points, Adrienne Morales-Taite scored seven points, and Hua had six points and five steals to contribute to Rosemead’s win.
Jennifer Escobar led Mt. View with nine points, and teammates Perla Medina added six points and Lorraine Gonzales had four points.
Rosemead improved to 9-11 overall and 4-0 in MVL, while Mt. View is 2-12 and 1-3 in MVL.

Win Two More Games
Rosemead High School Lady Panthers girl’s varsity basketball team won 40-28 against visiting El Monte on Jan. 26, and then won 40-28 at South El Monte on Jan. 28, to improve to 6-0 in Mission Valley League action and 11-11 overall.
Rosemead’s junior varsity team won both MVL games to also improve to 6-0 in league.
Rosemead’s frosh-soph team lost 32-22 at St. Matthias on Jan. 28.
Sophomore guards Melody Gauthier and Sydney Hua continue to pace the Lady Panthers as Gauthier had 17 points, four rebounds, three blocked shots, five steals and five assists against El Monte, while Hua added four points, six steals and four rebounds. Priscilla Franco contributed six points, nine rebounds and two steals for Rosemead, while teammate Kim Hong added six points and six rebounds. Rosemead led 13-7 at the half, and 24-14 after three quarters.
Salina Samario with nine points and Aileen Giang with eight points led El Monte.
Hua led Rosemead with 12 points, seven rebounds, and 14 steals against South El Monte. Gauthier added seven points, 10 rebounds, four blocked shots, six steals and seven assists.
South El Monte led 23-18 at halftime. Then, Rosemead outscored South El Monte 22-6 in the second half to win.
