KIM PLATER AND ALICE SLAUGHTER TO DISCUSS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND NANCY KRUEGER TO TALK ABOUT HEALTH AT SIERRA MAR DISTRICT BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S FALL CONFERENCE

Monterey Park, CA— October is Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month – Purple ribbons, symbol of domestic violence, will be given to all those in attendance. Speakers Kim Plater and Alice Slaughter, co-founders of DVAC, Domestic Violence Action Coalition, will speak on domestic violence at the Fall Conference of the Sierra Mar District of Business and Professional Women on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 2009 S. Garfield Avenue, Monterey Park. Registration is at 8:45 a.m. with the meeting starting at 9:00 a.m. Plater and Slaughter will be speaking

about 10:30 a.m. Krueger will be speaking about 1:30 P.M. The conference and luncheon is open to all interested people. Registration is $15, but there is no registration cost for guests. In addition, attendees are encouraged to bring period products or a donation for period products which will be donated to an organization helping unhoused women. Sierra Mar has this as its project for 2023-24 along with Family Promise of the San Gabriel Valley.

Kim Plater was the first female police officer of the Covina Police Department and the Baldwin Park Police Department. She retired from Cal Poly Pomona as Chief of Police. Alice Slaughter was the first female Police Officer at Cal Poly Pomona. In April 2011 Plater received a Woman of Achievement award from State Senator Ed Hernandez in recognition of her work in support of Law Enforcement and Domestic Violence issues. Plater has handled hundreds of domestic violence cases. One in four women has some connection over a lifetime with domestic abuse.

Nancy Krueger is a Certified Health and Wellness Coach (nutrition), a Certified Vegetable and Fruit Juice Therapist (nutrition) and a Personal Fitness Trainer. She has certificates from the American Red Cross First-Aid/AED/CPR and CERT Community Emergency Response Team. She worked for the Little Lake City School District from 1990 until retiring in 2019. Besides teaching Special Education, she was the school site CSEA representative and held various elected positions with them from 2010-2019. She has volunteered for the Boys Scouts, is active in her church and has served on various committees for the City of Santa Fe Springs. She is immediate past President of the Santa Fe Springs Woman’s Club and is the Pio Pico Woman’s Club Recording Secretary. She is the San Gabriel Valley District Health and Wellness Chair.

The State Representative will be immediate Past California Federation of Business and Professional Women (CFBPW) President Lynn Brandstater. Brandstater has more than

thirty years experience working with nonprofit agencies, including agency management and facility construction. Her political advocacy for those with chronic mental illness throughout her nonprofit work spurred her to look at how different populations are marginalized in society. The workplace disparities between women and men led to her commitment to BPW.  She is currently a partner in Delta Consulting, LLC, a firm specializing in revenue management projects in the healthcare field.

Mavis Hansen, President of El Monte BPW, will be the Presiding Officer for the meeting.

Sierra Mar BPW District is based in the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys and is part of the CFBPW. The organization is a member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs (NFBPWC) and BPW International. BPW has been advocates for women’s issues for more than 104 years.

The mission of Sierra Mar District of the California Federation of Business and

Professional Women is “to promote and support equity for working women in all phases
of their lives and to promote personal empowerment and professional development.” Our objectives are “to advocate on state and national legislative issues of importance to women, to promote personal and professional development for women and to foster connections among women to promote BPW and its members.” Membership is open to both men and women who support this mission and these objectives. Those who are members also belong to NFBPWC and BPW International.
