Hispanic Heritage Month 2023
Members of the Two Or More Band played Rock and Roll Music to the delight of the residents who attended the Farmers’ Market in Barnes Park in Monterey Park on September 14th.
The City Council approved a Resolution at their September 6th meeting that September 15th through October 15th 2023 to be National Hispanic Heritage Month in Monterey Park.
Elizabeth Perez and Margie Chang were the first residents to sign up for “The Friendly Fred Walk” in honor of Councilmember Fred Sornoso, who died last year. He enjoyed walking around town and visiting the Farmers’ Market.
Elizabeth Perez and Margie Chang were joined by Interim City Manager Inez Alvarez and city employee Andy Lee as the residents gather to begin the walk around Barnes Park.
Interim City Manager Inez Alvarez welcomed the residents to our Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration beginning tonight. Please enjoy yourself.
Councilmember Henry Lo said he served with Fred on the City Council until he resigned due to his illness. Fred was a very special person who always put other people before himself. Please enjoy this great walk.
Henry was advised that an orange butterfly was flying over the park just before the walk was scheduled to begin.
Henry advised the residents that a tree in Bella Vista was dedicated to Fred on August 15th. Fred’s sister said that orange butterflies were flying about the tree so she felt that Fred was watching over them.
Residents began their walk around the park in memory of Fred. They each received a wrist band and a discount ticket to purchase anything from the farmers during the evening.
Members of the Mariachi Orgullo Jalisience performed many beautiful Spanish songs to the enjoyment of the residents who were watching their performance.
The residents and their guests enjoyed this wonderful event.
