San Gabriel Unit 442 announces Girls State Delegates for 2009

Zelda Weiss of Alhambra, President of San Gabriel Unit 442 of the American Legion Auxiliary, has announced their Girls State candidates for 2009. Chosen to attend the 66th session of Girls State to be held June 22nd to July 3rd on the campus of Pitzer College in Claremont are Sharon Ichinose (Gabrielino High), Amrapoli Gokani (San Marino High), Julia Barrero of Altadena (La Salle High), Cynthia Amezcua (Rosemead High), Veronica Mazzolini of Temple City (San Gabriel Mission High) and Christine Keung (Temple City High).

Girls State is a work/study program in functional government, giving young junior girls from high schools throughout the State of California the challenging experience of actual participation in city, county and state elections and functions. Through this program of the American Legion Auxiliary, some 550 young students spend a week of learning and inspiration to become patriotic, responsible and intelligent citizens devoted to service to their community and country.

The District alumni who attended Girls State last year will welcome the new candidates to a Tea on May 17th, 3:00 p.m., at East Pasadena American Legion Post 280, 179 N Vinedo, Pasadena, when they will be entertained and told more about what to expect at Girls State. Currently the alumni are busy planning an exciting and interesting afternoon for the future Girls Staters.
