Monterey Park City Council Sends Message of Support to Louisville Community

On April11,The Monterey Park City Council is again saddened to learn about another senseless mass shooting, this time in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

The Council’s hearts and prayers are with the wounded, their family and friends, and mourns with the Louisville community the lives of those lost.

“The City Council sends our deep condolences to the victims’ families and sends support to the City of Louisville, the Louisville Metro Police and the first responders, as we condemn these cowardly acts of gun violence,“ said Mayor Jose Sanchez.

Monterey Park City Council Saddened by Recent Wave of U.S. Shootings

On April 19, The Monterey Park City Council is shocked and saddened to learn about more recent shootings such as those in Bowdoin, Maine; Hebron, New York; Kansas City, Missouri; and the Sweet 16 party shootings in Dadeville, Alabama.

The Council’s hearts and prayers again go out to the wounded, their family and friends, and mourns with the communities the lives lost and lives changed as the result of gun violence.

“The City Council’s deepest sympathies go out to those affected by yet another senseless act of gun violence. Our communities desperately need our lawmakers to act on gun safety reforms,” said Mayor Jose Sanchez.

Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library Seeks Applicants to Serve on the Board of Trustees

Applications are now being accepted for upcoming vacancies on the five-member Board of Trustees for the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library. Under Municipal Code 2.80.050, the five-member Library Board enforces all rules, regulations, and bylaws necessary for the administration, government and protection of the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library, located at 318 S. Ramona Avenue in Monterey Park.

The Board meets monthly on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Friends Room of the Library. Meetings are about one hour long. Special meetings may be scheduled as needed.

Trustees are appointed for a three-year term and applicants must be a City of Monterey Park resident. Applicants are interviewed and appointed by the City Council. A Trustee does not receive any compensation and can be reappointed for another consecutive three-year term by the City Council when his or her first term expires.

Celebrate Mental Health Month at the MPK Mental Health and Wellness Fair

Community members are invited to attend the 2023 City of Monterey Park Mental Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, May 20, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Langley Senior Center.

Attendees will visit with a variety of organizations from all over Los Angeles County that provide mental health services, support for families and legal assistance for those caring for someone with mental illness. There will be giveaways and free COVID vaccinations provided by Garfield Health Center. Free refreshments will be provided to the first 100 participants from a generous sponsorship by Chinatown Service Center Los Angeles.

May is the month to bring awareness to individuals living with mental health or behavioral disorders to reduce the stigma these individuals experience. Many do not receive care due to a lack of access to mental health services and shame. Join City of Monterey Park Recreation and Community Services Department and Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library by learning how to reduce the stigma which includes education, learning about treatment options, or joining a support group.

Monterey Park City Council Reacts to Allen, Texas Mall Shootings

The Monterey Park City Council is saddened and troubled by another heinous act of gun violence on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at an outdoor mall in Allen, Texas.

The City Council’s thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families of the eight adults and children killed, the seven wounded, and the Allen community. Two families are suffering the losses of multiple members. Most of the victims have been identified as Asian American or people of color, according to sources.

The Monterey Park City Council vigorously believes that all residents deserve to be safe from gun violence and supports common sense gun safety legislation such as bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, universal background checks, and red flag laws. The Council strongly encourages our local, state and federal representatives to act on these issues.
