STATE SENATOR SUSAN RUBIO TO SPEAKS AT SIERRA MAR DISTRICT BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S WINTER CONFERENCE

California State Senator Susan Rubio will update attendees on proposed and new legislation affecting women and children at the Winter Conference of the Sierra Mar District of Business and Professional Women on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 2009 S. Garfield Avenue, Monterey Park. Registration is at 8:45 a.m. with the meeting starting at 9:00 a.m. Rubio will be speaking about 12:45 p.m. The conference and luncheon is open to all interested people. Registration is $15, but there is no registration cost for guests. The cost of the box lunch is $10. Rubio was elected to the California State Senate in 2018 and represents the 22nd Senate District in eastern Los Angeles County. Previously, she was a public school teacher for 17 years at Baldwin Park and Monrovia school districts and was an elected official for 13 years in the City of Baldwin Park. She is the first Latina Chair of the State Senate Insurance Committee, Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Domestic Violence and Senate Assistant Majority Whip. She is Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Domestic Violence. In addition, she is a Select Committee Member of The Social Determinants of Children’s Well-Being; Asian Pacific Islander Affairs; Mental Health; California-Mexico Cooperation; and California, Armenia and Artsakh Mutual Trade, Art and Cultural Exchange. She is also a Member of the Latino Legislative Caucus, Legislative Jewish Caucus, Los Angeles Caucus, San Gabriel Valley Caucus and Legislative Women’s Caucus. Born in Juarez, Mexico, Senator Rubio is the proud daughter of a former bracero worker and housekeeper. She attended East Los Angeles College and later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Azusa Pacific University. She now lives in Baldwin Park, California.

The CFBPW State Representative will be Marjory Hopper, CFBPW Programs/Projects Chair, Valley Sunset BPW District President and Hollywood BPW President. Hopper is a graduate of Whittier College and received her Master’s in Library and Information Science from the University of Southern California. She was a librarian for the City of Los Angeles – most recently at the John C. Fremont Branch Library. Her specialty is working with children as a storyteller, puppeteer and book talker. She has received the City of Los Angeles Community Service Award, the Children’s Service’s (LAPL) Award for outstanding Children’s Librarian, the Hollywood Coordinating Council Outstanding Community Service Award and the Woman’s Club of Hollywood’s award for Excellence to the Community.

Sally McMahon, President of East Valley BPW, will be the Presiding Officer for the meeting. She will be providing training on how bills become law, how the California Federation of Business and Professional Women review bills along with possible stands on the bills and how members can get involved in the legislative process.

Sierra Mar District is based in the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys and is part of the California Federation of Business and Professional Women (CFBPW). The organization is a member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs (NFBPWC) and BPW International. BPW has been advocates for women’s issues for more than 103 years.

The mission of Sierra Mar District of the California Federation of Business and Professional Women is “to promote and support equity for working women in all phases of their lives and to promote personal empowerment and professional development.” Our objectives are “to advocate on state and national legislative issues of importance to women, to promote personal and professional development for women and to foster connections among women to promote BPW and its members.” Membership is open to both men and women who support this mission and these objectives. Those who are members also belong to NFBPWC and BPW International.
