East Los Angeles-Montebello BPW Woman of Achievement Award

Carol Sullivan introduced Kathryn Foster to the people who attended the award’s dinner at Marie Callender’s Restaurant in Monterey Park on October 25th.

When Carol called Kathryn to ask her if she would accept this award, she did not know her. They met over the phone and enjoyed a long conversation.

Monterey Park residents Shirley Hwong, Dora Leung, Vince Chang, Jim Iwaki, Jason Dhing and Issabell Wu all knew Kathryn as they have served on many commissions together as well as the Library Board and volunteered at the Museum.

Carol Sullivan said the Kathryn Foster was born in Lynwood and her parents moved to newly developed Holly Oak Place in Monterey Park in 1959. After she graduated from High School she headed to Westwood. She was fortunate to enjoy traveling and lived in Cambridge in Boston, Ma.

Kathryn and her husband moved back to Monterey Park in 1984.

They have a son who graduated from Berkley and Georgia State University.

They also have two grandsons ages five and seven.

Kathryn is an active community volunteer. She served as President of the Monterey Park Historical Society, on our Parks and Recreation Commission, on the Library Board and the Library Foundation.

Her BA degree is from UCLA and her MA degree is from Loyola Marymount University. She graduated from Mark Keppel in 1967.

Kathryn is a longtime volunteered for UCLA as a member of the Gold Shield, a member of the Golden Bruin and the Affiliates.

Kathryn is a retired legal secretary from Gibson Dunn. She said “Life has been very Good!”

Jim Iwaki, Treasurer of the Historical Society of Monterey Park thanked Kathryn for her spirit as a volunteer. She requested student docents from Mark Keppel to help at the museum. She also helped with the John Scudder Scholarship Awards. He said that Marion Sumimoto could not be here tonight but she created their award.

Jim Iwaki presented their award to Kathryn Foster for her volunteerism at the museum.

Jason Dhing  said he first met Kathryn when they served together on the Library Board of Trustees. They made a great team. He presented Kathryn with a certificate from the Library Board of Trustees.

Shirley Hwong said they met while serving on the Community Relations Commission many years ago.

Vince Chang spoke about meeting Kathryn many years ago. She worked in the legal department of Gibson Dunn. He thanked her for her service to our community. He congratulated her for being the best of Monterey Park.

Linda Wilson, President of the East Los Angeles-Montebello BPW presented Kathryn Foster with their Woman of Achievement Award for 2022.

Award7

Kathryn Foster thanked the members of the BPW for this award. She is now retired and will be volunteering in the future. Please support the BPW Association.
