Assemblymember Mike Fong Sends Bills to Support College Students, Essential Workers, and Small Businesses to the Governor

On September 1, The California State Legislature has passed, with strong bipartisan support, AB 1811, AB 1958, AB 2003, AB 2158, and AB 2917, bills authored by Assemblymember Mike Fong (D-Alhambra). On August 26th, Governor Newsom signed AB 1811, a bill that requires local flood control districts to plan for climate change, into law.

“I am honored by the support from my colleagues on these bills and proud of what we were able to accomplish in a short time. Each bill addresses important issues we face as Californians,” Assemblymember Fong said.

The bills on the Governor’s desk are:

  • AB 1958 – establishes the Community College Student Access, Retention, and Debt Cancellation Program.
  • AB 2003 – assists essential workers in their career pursuits by directing the California Workforce Development Board to develop model career pathways for essential workers.
  • AB 2158 – requires members of the governing boards of school districts and county offices of education, and members of the governing bodies of charter schools to receive training in ethics every two years.
  • AB 2917 – requires the California Commission on Disability Access to gather data and create educational materials to address and facilitate compliance with accessibility standards for websites, parking lots, and exterior paths of travel.

The Governor has until September 30 to sign or veto bills. Bills signed into law take effect on January 1, 2023.

Assemblymember Mike Fong was elected to the 49th District of the California State Assembly in February 2022, representing Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City, and parts of Montebello and South El Monte.
