Native Plants is Topic at SG Mission on Nov. 6
San Gabriel – San Gabriel Mission History Day on Sat., Nov. 6, will feature Cynthia Guthrie, a local native plant specialist, who will speak about native plants in the area many years ago and about San Gabriel Mission growing them again at the mission.
The event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the museum patio area (rain or sun) with informal talks by Guthrie with the public. She also will have some native plants on display with a special endangered plant included. Guthrie said all the plants are scheduled to be planted in November as it is a very good time of year to plant native plants.
Guthrie has studied native plants and their cultural uses for approximately 25 years, and is involved in many habitat restoration projects. Born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley, she was involved for many years in the local Native American community. She gives presentations and leads nature walks.
Guthrie has worked in association with San Gabriel Mission, Angelus National Forest, Pasadena Audubon Society, Baldwin Hills Conservancy, Pasadena Parks and Natural Resources, and The Theodore Payne Foundation.
