Rosemead School District Announces the Recognition of Three Elementary Schools: Janson, Savannah, and Shuey, Earning a Best Elementary School Badge and Muscatel Middle School Earning a Best Middle School Badge by Placing Among the Top 30% in California, Named by U.S. News & World Report

Rosemead, California: The Rosemead School District today announced that three (3) of its elementary schools: Mildred B. Janson Elementary School, Savannah Elementary School, and Emma W. Shuey Elementary School have been recognized as a “Best Elementary School” and Muscatel Middle School has been recognized as a “Best Middle School” by placing among the top 30% in California.

For each state, schools are assessed on their pupils’ proficiencies in mathematics and reading, as measured by state assessment tests. Half of the ranking formula was the results themselves; the other half was the results in the context of socioeconomic demographics. In other words, the top-ranked schools are high achieving ones that succeeded in educating all of their students. All data for the rankings are from third-party sources, including the U.S. Department of Education. U.S. News has published state rankings for more than 47,000 public elementary schools and more than 23,000 public middle schools. Most schools with an elementary school ranking offer grades K-5 or K-6, while most with a middle school ranking offer grades 6-8 or 7-8. Some schools with wider grade spans were ranked in both categories.

“It’s an honor and privilege that four of our schools were recognized and awarded this prestigious title. The Rosemead School District is committed to academic excellence and preparing its students for a bright and successful future. Superintendent Ruvalcaba, our principals, teachers, and staff embrace this vision through their unwavering dedication to the students and tireless work. This award would not be possible without their exemplary diligence,” shared Board President Ms. Nancy Armenta.

“This recognition is a direct result of the hard work of our talented students and dedicated teachers, support staff, and administrators. Our Board of Trustees’ unwavering commitment to the success of our students demonstrates that with the right support and mindset all students can achieve at very high levels. I would like to congratulate Janson, Savannah, Shuey, and Muscatel school staff and our amazing students,” said Mr. Alejandro Ruvalcaba, Superintendent of Schools.

Our four principals had the following to say about their schools’ honor: “

The Janson team and I are honored to receive the U.S. News Best Elementary Schools award and I am so incredibly proud of the entire team at Mildred B. Janson School. I’ve been blessed to work with a fantastic group of caring and dedicated educators who constantly strive to provide the best for our students. Congratulations to our Janson students, staff, parents, and community on this special recognition,” said Dr. Gabriel Cardenas, Principal of Mildred B. Janson Elementary School.

“Savannah School is honored to be named one of the top-ranked schools in California by US News Education. Thank you to the teachers and support staff who work diligently to ensure our students are advancing in all curricular areas. Thank you to our school district for their support of the academic programs at Savannah School. I am honored to work with such an amazing Savannah team and school district,” said Mrs. Ruth Soto, Principal of Savannah Elementary School.

“Emma W. Shuey School is proud to be recognized as one of the best elementary schools in Rosemead by U.S. News and World Report. We are honored to be included in this ranking along with the other wonderful Rosemead School District schools. This recognition is the result of not only the tremendous dedication of the parents, teachers, and staff, but also the outstanding work and profound insights of the Shuey students. Throughout the pandemic and beyond, Shuey School is deeply committed to providing a high quality educational environment that emphasizes the development of the whole child,” said Mrs. Jan Brydle, Principal of Emma W. Shuey Elementary School.

Muscatel Middle School is humbled to be named a Best Middle School. Our committed staff works to ensure both the academic and social-emotional needs of our students are met from the moment they walk through our gates in the morning. Our teachers are dedicated to providing rigorous educational opportunities for our learners, along with the scaffolding and support to assist every child in reaching their full potential. Our students are hard-working and strive to make the most of each learning experience. We are grateful to all of our Mustang families who allow us to educate and enrich their children each day,” said Mrs. Jocelyn Wilson,  Principal of Muscatel Middle School.

Our District is extraordinarily proud of the continued hard work and dedication of our students and staff at each school. This recognition is a true testament of our continued focus on academic results and the commitment to student success.
