The American Legion has long acknowledged and supported the importance of Scouting to the youth of our nation, both in character development, community service and an investment in he future.  The American Legion annually searches for an “Eagle Scout of the Year” on the National level.  Applicants must be an active member of a Boy Scout Troop, Varsity Scout Team or Venturing Crew chartered to an American Legion Post, Auxiliary Unit or Sons of The American Legion Squadron or a son or grandson of a Legionnaire or Auxiliary member.  Applicants must have received the Eagle Scout Award, be active in a religious institution and must have received the appropriate Boy Scout religious emblem, demonstrated practical citizenship in church, school, Scouting and the community, and have reached their 15th birthday and be enrolled in high school at the time of selection.  On the National level there is a first place scholarship of $10,000 and three-second place $2,500 awards.  San Gabriel American Legion Auxiliary Unit 442 Scouting Chairman Peggy McIntosh asks that interested scouts who feel they can qualify contact her for the necessary application (626-287-0139 or peggymac@att.net) or the application can be downloaded from The American Legion website.   Completed applications must be submitted to her by February 10th to be eligible for consideration.
