Author Book Talk and Book Signing Event

Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library will host a special author event with John Jung. Dr. Jung is professor of Psychology Emeritus, CSULB and will talk about his book, Southern Fried Rice: Life in a Chinese Laundry in the Deep South on Thursday, September 16 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library located at 318 S. Ramona Avenue in Monterey Park.

Dr. Jung’s parents were Chinese immigrants who raised the only Chinese family living in Macon, Georgia between the late 1920’s to early 1950’s. Dr. Jung began writing his parent’s story after he retired from teaching psychology. The Inflatable Water Slide story soon turned into a book, “Southern Fried Rice” about his experiences and provides historical insight on the issues of culture, identity, immigration and race relations of Chinese immigrants living in the South when Jim Crow segregation ruled.

The book was well-received and inspired Dr. Jung to write other books that paid tribute to Chinese immigrants and their unique perspective on American immigration. Audiences have enjoyed Dr. Jung’s presentations about “Southern Fried Rice” at museums, universities, and libraries throughout the United States.

Dr. Jung’s books will be available for purchase at the library event on September 16 and he will sign books after his book talk. For more information about this free event, please call the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library reference desk at (626) 307-1358
