MONTEREY PARK POLICE INVESTIGATE ATTEMPTED FRAUD

On August 31, 2010, the Monterey Park Police Department received reports from business owners that they received threatening phone calls demanding money. These reports were similar to ones the Monterey Park Police Department received in the past.

In both the current and past incidents, Asian businesspersons were telephoned and money was demanded for the caller’s brothers. In those investigations, it appeared the suspects selected their targets at random using a business phone directory for the phone numbers and had no other knowledge of the intended victims.

There are no reported incidents of any of the threats being carried out or businesspersons paying money to the suspects. If a business receives this type of phone call we urge them to contact their local police agency.

The Monterey Park Police Department requests that any information regarding these crimes be forwarded to Detective Porter at (626) 307-1432 or stay anonymous and call CRIMESTOPPERS at 800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477)
