Monterey Park Fire Department Reports on Structure Fire at 1400 College View Drive
On February 13, 2020 at 11:20 p.m., the Monterey Park Fire Department along with units from the Montebello, Los Angeles County and Alhambra Fire Departments responded to a reported structure fire at 1400 College View Drive in Monterey Park.
Arriving units encountered a multi-unit apartment building with, what was initially reported by police units, as possible BBQ smoke coming from the balcony. Upon investigation, a fully involved apartment unit was encountered. A second alarm assignment was initiated due to the structure and that pack rat like conditions were encountered. The fire was contained to the unit of origin, however several adjoining units were left without power, thus displacing approximately nine residents. The American Red Cross was called in to assist those displaced.
The resident of the involved unit was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. No firefighters were injured during the incident. Two dogs were rescued from the apartment unit.
Damage is estimated at approximately $40,000. The cause of the fire was determined to be a candle left unattended on or near a couch.
