Novel Coronavirus Update Posted January 29

The City of Monterey Park is taking a proactive approach to the recent reports of an increase in the occurrences of the Novel Coronavirus, which has been making headlines in the past few days. As of this time, there have been two confirmed cases of the Coronavirus in Southern California: one in Orange County and one in Los Angeles County.

Per the Los Angeles County Public Health Department, there is no immediate threat to the general public, no special precautions are required and people should not be excluded from activities based on their race, country of origin, or recent travel if they do not have symptoms of respiratory illness. Los Angeles residents, students, workers, and visitors should continue to engage in their regular activities and practice good public health hygiene as this is the height of the flu season across the County.

Public Health also urges individuals who have recently traveled to Wuhan City and who develop fever or respiratory symptoms, to contact their healthcare provider. Public Health requests that healthcare providers treating patients with respiratory symptoms ask these patients about their travel history to Wuhan, China and to report suspected novel coronavirus infections to Public Health.

The Monterey Park Fire Department takes issues like this very seriously. As with all emergency medical calls, precautions are in place to ensure personnel and patient safety. During all medical calls, fire personnel wear personal protective equipment to include eye protection, gloves and if needed, respiratory protection. As a resident, it is always a good idea to keep your hands away from your face and far from your mouth and nose. Clean communal surfaces at least once a day and wash your hands regularly especially after touching any communal surfaces and stay at least three feet away from anyone who’s coughing or sneezing.
