On May 17 Assemblymember Ed Chau (D – Monterey Park) held a press conference with a coalition of local leaders from the 49th Assembly District to urge all communities to get ready for the Census 2020.  The decennial census is used to determine federal funds, grants and support to states.

“Like all Californians, I have concerns that we may have an undercount of our population which will have detrimental consequences to our state,” said Assemblymember Chau.  “We are less than a year away from April 1, 2020, the reference day for Census 2020.”

Speakers joining Assemblymember Chau at the press conference included, Monterey Park Mayor Peter Chan; Sara Pol-Lin and Irving Pacheco, Regional Program Managers, California Complete Count – Census 2020; An Le, 2020 Census Statewide Network Manager, Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Los Angeles (AAAJ-LA); Esperanza Guevara, Census Campaign Manager, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA); Derek Ma, President, Chinese American Community Affairs Council; and Sher Li, President, Chinese American Federation.

“In raising awareness for Census 2020, our goal is to ensure that all of our communities are accounted for.  An inaccurate count could result in less funding and representation from the federal government, so we must be prepared,” concluded Assemblymember Chau.

Also in attendance were representatives from the United States Census Bureau, federal, state, county and local levels of government, as well as leaders from various chambers of commerce and community based organizations from throughout the 49th Assembly District.

“I am honoring CPAD today for its dedication to helping individuals with special needs and their families,” said Assemblymember Chau. “CPAD is exemplary in providing culturally and linguistically relevant services to the families and caretakers of individuals with special needs, so they can lead more independent and fulfilling lives.”

Since 1990, CPAD has offered services to special needs individuals, parents, and caretakers. Programs include on-on-one parent support and workshops, recreational activities such as music therapy and independent living training, as well as annual field trips.

CPAD has grown and expanded to work with over 250 families.  By coordinating with local facilities in the community, they are able to provide information about various disabilities, suggest referrals to appropriate community resources, and offer interpreter and translation assistance.

It serves individuals residing in the Greater Los Angles and Orange County area, including Monterey Park, which is located in the 49th Assembly District.

The California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits) hosted California Nonprofits Day, at the State Capitol, in honor of nonprofits across the State.
