BARBARA KAPPOS TO DISCUSS “DOMESTIC ABUSE AND CHILDREN” AT THE SIERRA MAR DISTRICT BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Barbara Kappos, Executive Director of the East Los Angeles Women’s Center, will give a presentation on “Domestic Violence And the Impact on the Family” at the Annual Conference of the Sierra Mar District Business and Professional Women on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 2009 S. Garfield Avenue, Monterey Park. Registration is at 8:45 a.m. with the meeting starting at 9:00 a.m. Kappos will be speaking at about 1:15 p.m. The conference and luncheon is open to all interested people. The morning speaker at 10:30 a.m. will be Ashley Maria speaking on the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women. Ashley Maria was selected as the Young BPW member representing North America and the Caribbean to attend the United Nation’s Commission on the Status of Women in New York City – the principal global policy-making body dedicated exclusively to gender equality and the advancement of women and girls. This was an honor given to only five Young BPW members across the world. Along with this honor, Ashley Maria attended the BPW Leader’s Summit where she represented the future of BPW by creating new sustainable projects with other Young BPW members. Ashley Maria will share this and more of her experiences in New York City in her talk! Ashley Maria is a filmmaker based in Los Angeles, CA. Winner of the coveted Directors Guild of America (DGA) award, she was also featured by the DGA Women’s Steering Committee as a director who represents The Future of Women in Film.

The luncheon speaker will be Salma Solis, who in January was honored as East Los Angeles-Montebello BPW’s Young Careerist. Solis has worked at the Boys and Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley since 2013. She started as a part-time Front Desk Attendant and is now Director of Operations for the Boys and Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley, where she manages and oversees the main site in Monterey Park. Solis grew up in Boyle Heights and grew up without a father figure. It was only her mom and two siblings. She is the second oldest of the family. She was the first of the family to finish high school and the first of her family to graduate college with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Westwood College.

Kappos, the afternoon speaker, has more than 25 years of experience working in the Greater East Los Angeles communities providing services to vulnerable families. Kappos has established a variety of service models based on best practices and culturally relevant interventions. Kappos is a licensed social worker with experience in the field of social work and has been influential in the areas of child welfare, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, sexual assault and substance abuse recovery. She has published and conducted several articles and studies in the field of substance abuse, domestic violence and HIV/AIDS. Kappos is a well recognized leader with expertise in community development, clinical practice and gender based violence.

Sierra Mar District is based in the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys and is part of the California Federation of Business and Professional Women (CFBPW).  The organization is a member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs (NFBPWC) and BPW International. BPW has been advocates for women’s issues for more than 99 years.

The mission of the Sierra Mar District of the California Federation of Business and Professional Women (CFBPW) is “to promote and support equity for working women in all phases of their lives and to promote personal empowerment and professional development.” Our objectives are “to advocate on state and national legislative issues of importance to women, to promote personal and professional development for women and to foster connections among women to promote BPW and its members.” Membership is open to both men and women who support this mission and these objectives.
