Garvey School District Has The First Computer Science Schools

Principal Robin Libby from Hillcrest Elementary School welcomed the students, parents, teachers and guests to the Second Anniversary of the Computer Science Immersion Program Celebration & “Maker Space” Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony on June 19th at Arlene Bitely Elementary School.

Hunter Pham, Wynn Feng, Roxana Mendez, Alfredo Nava and Delina Flores are the Garvey’s student leaders.

Mr. Pham welcomed everyone to this special event and thanked them for their support.  He introduced Rosemead City Councilmember Margaret Clark, School Boardmembers: Henry Lo, Ronald Trabanino and John Nunez, Becky Chang from Congressmember Judy Chu’s office, Henry Lo from Assemblymember Ed Chau’s office, Williams Plump from Code to the Future, Danny Salas from Woodcraft Rangers and Julie Benavides from East Los Angeles College.

He thanked the schools principals: Rudy Torres, Christina Hirales, Lindsey Roach and Robin Libby for their support. He also thanked all of the parents for supporting their children.

Mr. Feng called it an amazing journey with the computer service programs. They are “Coding To The Future”. The Garvey School District has implemented a Computer Science Immersion Program for all TK through grade 6 students.

The District’s Computer Science Schools, provided through a partnership with Code To The Future, are among the first in LA County in using digital learning to help students develop coding skills as well as a wide range of math and language skills.

The program has been a tremendous success and has drawn outside educators, including superintendents and principals, to visit our classrooms.

He said in 2020 1.4 million computer jobs will be available. They maybe a computer gap in our future if students don’t learn how to code. These classes help him become a leader in the 21st century.

Roxana Mendez and Alfredo Nava spoke about the computer age in 2028. Computers will change the way we live. There will be robots in the medical field. Cars could fly. Robots could help teachers in the classrooms. The future may have digital car and pets. Computer science is the future.

Hunter Pham, Wynn Feng, Roxana Mendez, Alfredo Nava and Delina Flores were presented a proclamation by Henry Lo from Assemblymember Ed Chau’s office for their successful programs. Mr. Lo is also a member of the school board. He said it is important to help our children in education.

Becky Chang, Henry Lo, Danny Salas, Williams Plump, Ronald Trabanino, Margaret Clark and Anita Chu joined Hunter Pham, Wynn Feng, Roxana Mendez, Alfredo Nava and Delina Flores for a group picture.

Delina Flores thanked everyone for attending this event. She asked the guests to visit the various workstations and see the students’ successes.

Students built their robot cars and drove them all around the floor from their lap top computers.

Students showed their parents and guests how to scratch or programming their computers to build a copy of the state of California map, how to use Mindcraft to build California Missions, how to build robots and Lego cities.

The event ended with a delicious BBQ dinner.

Garvey School District is taking strong steps in becoming a leading district for Computer Science and is leading the way in building a cutting-edge 21st century learning environment for all students.
