Costco Relocates to a Bigger and Better Building in Monterey Park

Costco replaced its Montebello location with a new facility 3 miles northwest, at 2000 Market Place Drive in Monterey Park. On Thursday, May 31st the doors were open to the public immediately following the ribbon cutting at 8:00 a.m.

Costco held a VIP reception on the evening of May 30th to thank all of the elected officials, department heads and residents for their many long years of planning to bring the Market Place to the residents of Monterey Park. It was a long road for everyone in town. The wait is now over so the residents of Monterey Park and their neighbors in other cities can shop in our Market Place.

The company determined that the original location was too small to adequately provide all the amenities newer buildings have. The original location will close at the end of business on Tuesday, May 29th.

The new Monterey Park building is 15 percent larger, at 158,000 square feet, compared to the original 137,000 square feet. The building will have the latest services that Costco offers, including a 24-pump Gas Station and a Hearing Aid Center.

“In addition to exciting new and expanded services, the relocation will provide our members with an extensive product selection in numerous categories – including fine wine, apparel and electronics” said Warehouse Manager Yin Lawler.

The new warehouse will offer quality, brand-name and private-label merchandise at substantially lower prices than can be found through conventional wholesale or retail sources. Costco helps small-to-medium size services for members’ personal use as well.

In addition to the departments already listed, the new location will feature an Optical Department with Independent Doctor of Optometry, and a Pharmacy. The Monterey Park location includes Fresh Meat; Fresh Produce; Fresh Bakery; Fresh Deli with Rotisserie Chicken; Tire Center; Beer, Liquor & Fine Wine; and a Food Court.

The new Costco will employ 310, compared to 250 at the original building. Costco operates 125 warehouses in California, 519 in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and 749 worldwide. Costco has been recognized throughout the country for providing its employees with real living wages – the highest in the industry – and for its ethical business practices.

“On behalf of the community and the City Council, I wish to welcome Costco to Monterey Park. We look forward to shopping locally and supporting our retailers,” said Mayor Stephen Lam.

The next business to locate in the Market Place is Home Depot, which will be open for business on June 14th.
