On April 13, Assemblymember Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park) held an informational workshop at East Los Angeles College, in the City of Monterey Park, to inform constituents on California’s recreational cannabis laws.

“When voters approved Proposition 64, California entered into a new era with regard to recreational cannabis, which has prompted many questions and concerns from the community on how this new law governs and regulates the use, cultivation and sale of cannabis,” said Assemblymember Chau.  “The purpose of the workshop was to provide the community with information, from experts involved in local government, on how this new law is being carried out, to answer any questions, and gather feedback.”

California joined other states in legalizing the recreational use of cannabis when voters approved Proposition 64 (The Adult Use of Marijuana Act) in November of 2016. The law went into effect on January 1, 2018.  At the workshop constituents learned about the impact of cannabis legalization on public safety, the work being done by the County of Los Angeles to implement Proposition 64, and the different regulations that local governments can impose.

The event included presentations from Gabriel Escarsega, Sergeant with the Monterey Park Police Department; Julia F. Orozco and Joseph Nicchitta, Principal Analysts with the Los Angeles County Office of Cannabis Management; and David McPherson, Consultant with HdL Companies.

Assemblymember Ed Chau represents the 49th Assembly District, which includes the cities of Alhambra, Arcadia, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City, and portions of El Monte, Montebello, and South El Monte.
