EDUCATOR BOBBI BRUESCH TO DISCUSS “FAKE NEWS” AT THE SIERRA MAR DISTRICT BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON APRIL 21ST
Educator and former Rosemead Mayor Bobbi Bruesch will be the morning speaker and will be speaking on “Fake News” at the Annual Conference of the Sierra Mar District Business and Professional Women on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 2009 S. Garfield Avenue, Monterey Park. Registration is at 8:45 a.m. with the meeting starting at 9:15 a.m. The conference and luncheon is open to all interested people. Bruesch has 34 years of experience teaching 5th, 6th and 7th grades, and in addition she served fourteen years on the Garvey School Board. She was a State Teacher of the
Year finalist. She also served 20 years on the Rosemead City Council with five years as Mayor. She has also written the book I Teach: A Teacher’s Handbook for Making Teaching a Profession Again.
The luncheon speaker will be Diana Garcia, who in January was honored at East Los Angeles-Montebello BPW’s Young Careerist. Garcia is the Senior Librarian for Children’s Services at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library. She earned her Master’s in Library and Information Studies from San Jose State University. Garcia is currently Chair of the Program Coordinating Committee of the Association for Library Service to Children, serves on the Board of Directors of the Children’s Literacy Council of Southern California and was recently appointed to the Theodore Seuss Geisel Award Committee of the Association of Library Service to Children. In 2014 the California State Library selected Garcia to participate in Eureka! Leadership Institute. In June 2013 the Public Library Association awarded Garcia its “Innovation in Literacy Award” for her afterschool literacy program for children of parents with limited English proficiency.
The afternoon speaker will be Dr. Alejandra Marchevsky, who serves on the Liberal Studies Department at California State University, Los Angeles, and teaches courses in Women’s and Gender Studies, Latin American Studies and with the Honors College. Marchevsky will talk about “Sexual Harassment” and what can be done to alleviate it at Marchevsky will be speaking at about 1:15 p.m.
Sierra Mar District is based in the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys and is part of the California Federation of Business and Professional Women. The organization is a member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs (NFBPWC) and BPW International. BPW has been advocates for women’s issues for more than 98 years.
The mission of the Sierra Mar District of the California Federation of Business and Professional Women (CFBPW) is “to promote and support equity for working women in all phases of their lives and to promote personal empowerment and professional development.” Our objectives are “to advocate on state and national legislative issues of importance to women, to promote personal and professional development for women and to foster connections among women to promote BPW and its members.” Membership is open to both men and women who support this mission and these objectives.
