SELECTS DIANA GARCIA AS ITS “YOUNG CAREERIST FOR 2018”
East Los Angeles-Montebello Business and Professional Women (BPW) selected Diana Garcia, who is the Senior Librarian for Children’s Services at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library, as its “Young Careerist for 2018.” Garcia will be accepting the award at the Wednesday, January 24th dinner meeting of the East Los Angeles-Montebello BPW at the MERCI Multipurpose Building, 525 N. Chandler Avenue, Monterey Park. Networking starts at 4:30 P.M. Dinner which will cost about $12 and start at 5:00 P.M. The meeting is open to the public, but reservations are required. Garcia was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Stuart, Florida. Garcia attended Florida Atlantic University and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Political Science and a minor in Latin American Studies. She moved to Los Angeles in 2008 and worked as tutor in South Los Angeles before starting at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library in 2009.
While working at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library, she earned her Master’s in Library and Information Studies from San Jose State University. She worked previously as Homeless Outreach Educator at the Young at Art Children’s Museum in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and as a Library Assistant at the Martin County Library System. Garcia is currently Chair of the Program Coordinating Committee of the Association for Library Service to Children, serves on the Board of Directors of the Children’s Literacy Council of Southern California and was recently appointed to the Theodore Seuss Geisel Award Committee of the Association of Library Service to Children. In December 2017 she was selected as one of 28 librarians nationwide to participate in the Public Library Association’s Leadership Academy. In 2014 the California State Library selected Garcia to participate in Eureka! Leadership Institute. In June 2013 the Public Library Association awarded Garcia its “Innovation in Literacy Award” for her afterschool literacy program for children of parents with limited English proficiency.
The Young Careerist/Young Professional Program of BPW recognizes women and men between the ages of 21 and 35 who have been in their profession or business for at least a year.
