Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Library Hispanic Heritage Month event-Papel Picado workshop.

Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with cultural programs throughout the month of October.

Artist Norma Montoya presented a papel picado workshop on Sunday, October 1 at 2 p.m. in the Friends Room where she will talk about the origins of the Mexican folk art made out of paper and cut into intricate patterns and will demonstrate how to make the festive banners that are often displayed on holidays and special occasions. Adults participating in the workshop will have the opportunity to make a banner. Space is limited and registration is required for the free workshop.

Actor Paul Renteria screened his short film, “Pancho Villa’s Last Son,” on Sunday, October 8 at 2 p.m. in the Friends Room and will talk about his experiences as a film and television actor. Paul was inspired to act when he met actor/martial artist Bruce Lee and other celebrities as a child growing up in Alhambra. He is currently preparing to perform in the play, “An Enemy of the Pueblo,” at CASA 0101, October 20-November 12.

Guitarist Luis Del Angel will perform “Guitar Music Around the World,” with a variety of music from Mexico, South America, Spain and other countries on Sunday, October 22 at 2 p.m. in the Friends Room. He has performed with many great guitarists, singers and musicians throughout his career in venues worldwide.

Photographer David Morin will exhibit his photographs of people and places in Cuba and Ecuador. The special exhibit will run from October 1-30 and can be viewed in the front lobby on the first floor.

National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) recognizes the contributions made by generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. “Shaping the Bright Future of America” is this year’s national theme for Hispanic Heritage Month.
