On Wednesday, January 20, 2010, the Monterey Park City Council approved an amendment to the Monterey Park Municipal Code regarding curfew for minors.

The curfew was established to protect non-delinquent youth (miners- anyone under age 18) from crime and to protect the community from and reduce the opportunities for juvenile crime.

The curfew hours are 10:00 p.m. to sunrise the following day 7 days a week and 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday when school is in session (summer school is excluded). There are exceptions to the law including minors accompanied by a responsible adult and minors’ school not being in session.

Minors violating the law will be issued a citation; a $100 fine for a first offense, $200 for a second offense, and $500 for a third offense that occur within a one-year period.

The law takes effect on February 19, 2010, but the Police Department will observe a 10-day grace period and will not enforce the law until March 1st. Persons that are found violating the law between February 19 and March 1 will receive a warning.
