Assemblymember Chau Announces Digital Citizenshp Week In October

On October 17, Assemblymember Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park) joined students and officials from the Alhambra Unified School District, along with Craig Cheslog, Vice President of Policy for Common Sense Kids Action, to declare October 16-22, as Digital Citizenship Week.

“Digital media is changing the way our children live and learn, but it also poses potential dangers, such as cyberbullying and exploitation, if not managed appropriately,” said Assemblymember Ed Chau. “As a result, it is important that we, as a community, help our children understand and manage the role of digital media in their lives through additional investments in education.”

Digital Citizenship is a set of defined and teachable skills for children in the 21st century. It means that children appreciate the responsibility for their choice of content, as well as their actions when using the Internet, cell phone, and other digital media.

Today’s press conference highlighted the important role that schools and parents can play in building skills around critical thinking, ethical discussion, and decision-making by integrating this new media literacy into the overall curriculum across grade levels, starting as early as kindergarten.

On November 9, Assemblymember Ed Chau (D-Monterey Park), in partnership with the San Gabriel Valley Water Company and the California American Water Company, distributed 200 turkeys, as part of an annual program known as “Operation Gobble.” The event was held at the Boys & Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley in Monterey Park.

“This annual program is dedicated to bringing hunger issues in California to the forefront of public conversation, while providing a respite for those who need it most,” said Assemblymember Chau. “This Thanksgiving season, I hope that our event can inspire all of us to share in the spirit of giving and help ensure that no family goes to bed hungry.”

The turkeys were distributed to local charitable organizations that serve low-income families in the greater San Gabriel Valley. The organizations that received the donated turkeys include: Boys and Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley; El Monte/South El Monte Emergency Resources Center; Asian Youth Center; the Church of Our Saviour; Home of Angels; Kiwanis Club of Temple City; and Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. – Greater El Monte Post No. 10218.

Assemblymember Ed Chau represents the 49th Assembly District, which includes the cities of Alhambra, Arcadia, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City, and portions of El Monte, Montebello, and South El Monte.
