Garvey School Board Election

Garvey1

Henry Lo, a member of the Garvey Elementary School Board since 2003. He co-founded the Garvey Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that raised over $70,000 in mini-grants for district teachers and strengthened relationships between the district, local cities, community colleges, water districts and businesses. He won with 804 of the votes in the November 3rd election.

Garvey2

Keilley Meng, a former student of the Garvey School District and a district employee serving as a Teacher’s Aid and AVID tutor. She is finishing her Math Education degree and teaching credentials. She won with 588 votes in the election.

Garvey3

Angela Marie Rios, a mother of four children and a PTA member serving the district. She volunteers for every class and outside activity her children have been involved with. She serves on the Executive Board of Cuerva Urban Folklorico and the San Gabriel Western Accreditation School and Colleges Committee. She received 451 votes in this election.

These are the election results as of November 6th according to the Los Angeles County Register-Recorder’s office.

The District held a Meet the Candidates Form on October 20th.

Joyce Tamanaha-Ho welcomed the residents to the Garvey School Board Candidate Forum.  The League of Women Voters moderated the forum.

Michelle White, a member of the League of Women Voters was the moderator.  She introduced her assistances: Jane Wallace, Bern Ward and Dorothy Keane.

Ms. White said the League helps to educate the voters without supporting any of the candidates.

Residents of the school district listened as the candidates introduced themselves and answered several questions requested by the union and the residents attended this forum.

Each candidate expresses their desires to improved the education of the students, improve the lives for the teachers and how to spend district’s funds.

Editor’s Note: I found this forum to be very enlightening to all of the voters in the school district including myself.  Each candidate would serve the district to the best of their ability.  There were two seats opened (Henry Lo’s and Janet Chin’s, who did not seek re-election).

The Garvey School District has 18,629 registered voters but only a small number of voters determined the outcome of the Garvey School Board election.
